I have magazines with dimensions taller than the top of these holders, and longer than the "rear" openings (which is why I can't buy the ones with the closed ends.) It is for this reason that I purchased them. I can prop up my 1930's large format Fortune Magazines inside of these with no trouble. They are tall enough that the magazines do not fall over and of course with the open ends facing the inside of the shelves you can place different formats in them since all the magazine spines line up evenly from the front.
